BNO Holders Can Skip Biometric Appointments from 8 April 2026 - ID Check App Now Accepted
07 Mar 2026
Good news for BNO visa holders with an upcoming renewal or ILR application. From 8 April 2026, if you hold a chipped British National (Overseas) or Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport, you will be able to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to verify your identity — rather than booking and attending an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre. This change was introduced by the March 2026 Statement of Changes (HC 1691).
What changes on 8 April 2026
At present, BNO visa holders applying to renew their visa or apply for ILR must attend a UKVCAS service point in person to submit biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) and have their identity verified. From 8 April, you can instead complete this step entirely through the ID Check app on your smartphone — provided your passport meets two conditions:
- It must be chipped (a small chip symbol on the cover indicates this — most modern biometric passports qualify)
- It must be currently valid, or expired within the last five years
If both conditions are met, you will not need to attend a UKVCAS appointment for identity verification.
Biometric reuse — even fewer appointments
HC 1691 also expands the Home Office's ability to reuse previously enrolled biometrics. If you have already provided your fingerprints and photograph in a previous application, the Home Office can use that information instead of requiring you to attend a centre again. The rule change amends paragraph 34(5)(b) of the Immigration Rules from "must provide" identity evidence to "must have provided" — formally recognising previously submitted biometrics as satisfying the requirement.
In practice, this means many BNO holders making subsequent applications (for example, a second 30-month renewal or an ILR application) may be able to avoid a UKVCAS visit entirely.
What to do
- Check your passport: confirm it is chipped and in date (or expired within 5 years).
- Download the app: search for "UK Immigration: ID Check" on the App Store or Google Play. It is free.
- Wait until 8 April: the change is not yet in force. If your application is before that date, the current process still applies.
- Check the GOV.UK guidance: the page at gov.uk/guidance/using-the-uk-immigration-id-check-app will be updated when the change takes effect — confirm the process there before applying.
