BNO Route Expanded - Adult Children of BNO Holders Can Now Apply Independently

17 Mar 2026

If you are an adult child of a British National (Overseas) status holder but were born after 1 July 1979, you may soon be eligible to apply for a BNO visa in your own right — without needing a parent to sponsor you. The Home Office announced on 9 February 2026 that it will expand the Hong Kong BN(O) Household Member route to cover more adult children of BNO status holders.

What has changed

Previously, adult children of BNO holders could only come to the UK as dependants of their BNO-holder parent. That meant the parent had to hold an active BNO visa and include the adult child on their application. If the parent had already settled in the UK, or did not want to apply, adult children were left without a route.

Under the expanded rules, adult children of BNO status holders who were under 18 at the time of Hong Kong's 1997 handover — meaning those born after 1 July 1979 — will be able to apply for the BNO route independently as principal applicants. Their partners and children will also be able to accompany them.

The Home Office estimates the change will allow approximately 26,000 additional Hong Kongers to relocate to the UK over the next five years, on top of the more than 230,000 BNO visas already granted.

What this means for you

Once implemented, you would apply as a principal applicant on the BNO route rather than as a household member. This means:

When does this take effect?

The Home Office has not yet confirmed an implementation date. The February announcement set out the government's intention; the formal changes to the Immigration Rules have not yet been laid before Parliament. Watch GOV.UK and this blog for the update when a date is confirmed.

If you think you might be eligible, it is worth reviewing the current BNO visa eligibility requirements now so you are ready to apply when the route opens.
