BNO Route Expansion Confirmed for 8 April - Date Now Set and Biometrics Simplified

28 Mar 2026

If you are an adult child of a British National (Overseas) status holder born after 1 July 1979, mark 8 April 2026 in your diary. The Statement of Changes HC 1691, which came into force last week, has confirmed this as the date the BNO route expansion takes effect — closing the gap left by the February announcement, which named no implementation date.

What is confirmed from 8 April

From 8 April 2026, adult children of BNO status holders who were under 18 at the time of Hong Kong's 1997 handover — meaning those born after 1 July 1979 — can apply for a BNO visa as the principal applicant, without needing a parent's active application to sponsor them. Their partners and children can accompany them as dependants on the same application.

Once in the UK, these applicants access the same 5-year path to ILR as all other BNO holders, followed by British citizenship eligibility after a further year. The BNO route continues to carry a protected 5-year qualifying period — separate from the 10-year "earned settlement" period being introduced for most other routes.

Biometrics simplified for BNO applicants

Also from 8 April, BNO visa applicants who hold a current or recently expired BNO passport or HKSAR passport can verify their identity using the ID Check app, rather than attending an in-person biometric appointment at a visa application centre. This applies to both new and renewal applications where an eligible passport is available.

This will reduce the administrative friction of applying — particularly useful for those renewing from within the UK, who previously had to book and attend a VAC visit as part of every application cycle.

What to do now

If you think you or a family member may be eligible under the expanded rules, review the BNO visa eligibility requirements on GOV.UK now. Applications can be submitted from 8 April. Given the previous post on this site noted the date was unconfirmed, this update sets the record straight: the rules are now in force via HC 1691, and the April 8 date is fixed.

If you already hold a BNO visa and are approaching renewal, check whether you hold an eligible passport type for the ID Check app route — this could save you a trip to a visa centre.
