BNO rules clarify public funds access when you extend your visa
09 Aug 2026
If you're on the BN(O) route and previously had your no recourse to public funds (NRPF) condition removed, a new rule affects you when you come to extend your visa. Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas) was updated on 3 August 2026 to add rule HK 65.3.
The rule states that where you're applying for further permission for 30 months, and you previously had your permission varied to remove the no access to public funds condition under HK 65.1, a decision maker "may grant further permission without such a condition where they are satisfied that the applicant continues to meet the requirements set out in HK 65.1."
In plain terms, this means the removal of the public funds restriction isn't automatically locked in forever. When you apply to extend, you need to still meet the same exceptional circumstances that got the condition lifted in the first place. If your situation has changed since your last application, that's worth reviewing before you submit your extension.
