Expired BRP cards remain valid as settled status evidence until December 2026

10 Jun 2026

If you have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or another form of settled status, your expired Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) can still be used to prove your status to employers, landlords, and other services in the UK.

GOV.UK guidance updated on 8 June 2026 confirms: "You can use it for 24 months after the expiry date printed on your card or until 31 December 2026, whichever comes first." Even if your BRP has expired, you can keep using it as evidence of your right to live and work in the UK. The 31 December 2026 date is a hard backstop regardless of when your card expired.

There is one important exception. Expired BRPs cannot be used to travel to the UK. This has been the case since 2 June 2025. If you travel internationally, you need an eVisa to show your immigration status. To do this, sign in to your UKVI account and check that your eVisa is linked to your current passport. You will also need to "get a share code to prove your immigration status before you travel" - your carrier may ask for it. A share code is valid for 90 days.

If you have not yet set up your UKVI account or linked your eVisa to your current passport, do that before your next trip. For UK-based evidence purposes such as right-to-work or right-to-rent checks, your expired BRP card remains usable until the end of 2026.
