GOV.UK adds 3-week processing target for Returning Resident visa

27 Jun 2026

If you held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) but spent a long time outside the UK, your ILR may have lapsed. To come back, you need a Returning Resident visa. GOV.UK updated its overseas processing times guidance on 26 June 2026 to include this visa, listing a decision target of 3 weeks.

The change note on the page confirms: "Added the processing time for the Returning Resident visa." The Returning Resident visa now appears under the "Other visas and permits" section of the overseas processing times table.

If you are planning to return to the UK and think your ILR may no longer be valid due to a long absence, factor the 3-week processing target into your plans. Check the GOV.UK processing times page before making any travel arrangements.
