GOV.UK updates right to rent guidance with eVisa share codes

If you're renting in England on a visa, this affects how you prove your right to rent. GOV.UK updated its right to rent document checks guide on 10 August 2026, and the update centres on eVisa share codes rather than physical documents.
The guide explains that if you still hold a physical document, such as a biometric residence permit or an older passport with an ink stamp or vignette sticker, you "may be able to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa." From there, you generate a share code to give to your landlord. The guide notes that "individuals using the service will generate a 9-character long share code that can be passed on to a landlord, which, when entered alongside the individual's date of birth, enables the landlord to access their right to rent information," and that the code "will be valid for 90 days from the point it has been issued." Share codes for right to rent start with the letter R.
The update also removed outdated material. The linked update history confirms that "information about COVID-19 checks has been removed as it is out of date," with the easy read version of the guide moved to the separate landlord's guide.
If you're renting or about to sign a new tenancy, set up your UKVI account now if you haven't already, and generate a fresh share code before your landlord asks for one. This applies whether you have time-limited leave, indefinite leave to remain, or another qualifying immigration status, so don't assume it's only relevant to newer visa holders.
