Healthy Start Payments Rise for NRPF Families With Young Children

25 Sep 2026

If you're on a family visa or another route with a "no recourse to public funds" (NRPF) condition, and you have a British child under 4, this update affects you. The Department of Health and Social Care has updated its Healthy Start extension guidance, which sets out payment rates and evidence rules for families who can't normally claim public funds.

Under the updated guidance, eligible families get £4.65 a week for each child aged one to under 4, and £9.30 a week for each child under one. To qualify, your family's take-home pay must be £408 or less per month. The scheme is open to parents or guardians who are subject to an NRPF condition attached to their immigration permission, or who have no immigration status at all.

If you apply, don't worry about a short evidence-gathering delay costing you money. The guidance states that if you submit all the requested documents within 16 weeks of your first contact with the Healthy Start extension team, your payment will be backdated to the date of that first contact. To prove your NRPF condition, you can use a Home Office letter dated within the last 3 months, or the share code from your eVisa showing the NRPF condition. Only supporting organisations, not individuals, can apply on your behalf, so speak to a caseworker, charity, or advice service that can help you submit the application.
