New guide explains how to check your eVisa and UKVI account status

However close you are to ILR, you need to be able to prove your immigration status at short notice, for work, renting, travel or opening a bank account. A new guide published on 9 September 2026 walks through how to check that status through your UKVI account and share codes, and it flags a deadline that expired-BRP holders should know about.
The guide confirms that a share code used to prove your status "expires after 90 days," so codes you generate for landlords or employers need to be reasonably fresh. It also explains that an expired Biometric Residence Permit "may be used for 24 months after the expiry date printed on the card, or until 31 December 2026, whichever comes first, but only for limited purposes such as signing in to view an eVisa, creating a UKVI account or applying to extend permission."
If your BRP has already expired and you haven't yet set up your UKVI account, don't wait. After 31 December 2026, that fallback disappears regardless of how long it's been since your card expired. Log in to your UKVI account now, confirm your eVisa is showing correctly, and generate a share code if you need to prove your status to someone else.
