Skilled Worker Applicants Can Now Skip the Biometric Centre Using Facial Image Upload
10 Apr 2026
If you are on a Skilled Worker visa and applying for an extension or ILR within the UK, you may now be able to skip the in-person biometric enrolment appointment that used to be required for every application.
Since 26 March 2026, UKVI operates a biometric reuse system that applies to certain in-country routes. If your fingerprints are already held by the Home Office from a previous application, you may only need to upload a live facial image — a photo taken on your device through the online application — rather than travelling to a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) centre for a fresh enrolment. The routes where fingerprint reuse applies include: Skilled Worker, Graduate, Student, Child Student, Innovator Founder, Settlement Protection, and ILR for holders of refugee or humanitarian protection leave.
Before this change, every application required booking and attending an in-person UKVCAS appointment. The standard service costs around £70 per person and requires you to travel to a centre, which are not always near where you live. Under the new system, if your biometrics are being reused, that step is removed — you'll complete a facial image upload as part of the online application instead.
The reuse system is not automatic. UKVI determines on a case-by-case basis whether your existing biometric record is suitable. If your data is too old, too low quality, or cannot be matched for technical reasons, you will still be required to attend in person. Your application will indicate whether you need to book a biometric appointment — do not assume you're exempt. Wait for the system to confirm before skipping the centre booking. The change also applies only to in-country applications. If you are applying from outside the UK — for example, making an initial BNO application from Hong Kong — you will still need to attend a visa application centre in your country.
